“Early
on the morning of March 23, 2016, while searching for wildlife
in the Big Cypress National Preserve and surrounding areas
with Captain Franklin Adams (FWF Board of Directors) and my
research colleague, Dr. Forest Redding, Jr. (a former Fulbright
Senior Research Scholar), quite an extraordinary experience
occurred when we encountered a wild Florida Panther!! Although
I have spent many years exploring Florida's pristine wilderness
areas, I never thought seeing a panther in the wild would
happen in my lifetime.
As the full-grown
animal bounded right past us and then slowed down before reentering
the swamp, I was able to take sixty-two consecutive photographs.
The acrylic painting (featured above) began to take shape
while I was still feeling the adrenaline from this overwhelming
wildlife experience. I think this new painting captures the
essence of a Florida panther running freely into the warm
embrace of the rising sun.” - Peter R.
