Florida Scrub Jays in their natural Scrub Oak habitat “Featuring: one of my favorite birds (and I know a fascination of many Florida residents,) the distinctively wonderful Florida Scrub Jay in its natural and dense scrub oak habitat. With my new approach of using some sculpted molding-paste, I have finally been able to recreate intricately crisscrossed, delicate breast feathers. An effect I have always strived for, giving great realism to the foreground bird. With my new paintings, I am trying to go beyond what any photograph might do, “recreating reality” with 3-dimensional structure and dramatic color contrast. This piece is largely thanks to a forest ranger who bands Scrub Jays in the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve, he took me on a hike early one morning into the almost-impenetrable scrub. We hiked without a trail, the rough branches repeatedly scraped my arms. With a raspy whistling sound, he called the birds out to us. I was able to get remarkable photographs to work from; pictures that not only captured detail, but the actual inquisitive character of the birds.
