On a recent camping & boating trip, I was able to explore the pristine Wekiva River in Central Florida, a National Scenic River. At one point I pulled over to the riverbank and I was delighted to discover the presence of an adult and a juvenile Purple Gallinule... the juvenile had amazing colors and markings, like the adult. I'm often tending a campfire in my backyard at twilight. I have never seen panthers in this area, but seeing one in the wild, I felt gave me the right to include one in this painting! The blacks were done with Black 2.0 Acrylic, ordered from Europe! Supposedly the mattest, blackest black acrylic available.

This design began years ago, scuba diving and snorkeling... studying colorful Coral Reefs and the fascinating Marine Life thriving there. Sea Turtles were almost always nearby, but I wasn't able to get really macro, detailed photographs to do a painting. A visit to Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota provided me with the up-close Sea Turtles I had been hoping for, in order to get every detail. Included are Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Yellow Snappers, Queen Angelfish, Blue Tangs, Horse Conch, Fairy Basslet and various Corals including Staghorn & Elkhorn.

Burrowing Owls are exquisite creatures. It was obvious that each of these Owlets had their own personality, with Mom keeping a watchful eye out.

Using different size Ibises to create the illusion of depth. Some molding-paste was used to sculpt the Cypress roots along the edge of the river.

Based on a "shark encounter dive” I did with Dr. Forest W. Redding, Jr. last year. I wanted to capture the essence of these wonderful creatures; recreating the warm waters above the reefs where we were. I did a thick build-up of Gesso to give the foreground shark a 3-D look, with textured molding-paste sculpting the corals.

Re-visiting what I felt was one of my best paintings, Little Blue Cove, this piece was done from that very same place on Silver Lake, not far from home. The painting creates natural gradient of color from the blues in the water to the greens, yellows & reds to the soft pastel colors in the sky.

One late winter morning as the sun gracefully peeked over the horizon, Osceola Turkeys meandered out of the dense forest and into a clearing. Touched by the first light of day, their feathers became boldly colorful. It was the sun-radiating iridescence of these birds that I wanted to capture with this painting.
