“Somewhere
in the heart of wild Florida. Hard woods, late summer, high
noon and facing west, slightly southwest. My idea was to come
up with a painting that might depict the way different living
things perceive time. The background is impressionistic with
the movement of the Gray Fox on the hunt. The foreground is
very still and detailed, with the wild Brown Rabbit not flinching,
knowing the Fox is on the run and might pass by with the wind
blowing from the West. There is also less noticeably a Giant
Swallowtail and a Praying Mantis on the curved branch in the
center of the painting. The ball of moss in the foreground
implies how long a day might last for a slow-growing organism.
My
composition was loosely based on the face of a clock. I actually
did a road trip with my paints and the painting to work on
the piece in “different time zones,” just to help
keep the mood of the piece.” -Peter R. Gerbert
