“I didn’t realize what a remarkable creature this is, until I was hired to do a painting of one. My research for this painting went for almost two months. Special thanks to Vincent Morris with the Withlacoochee Forestry Center, for helping me find the burrows. As we hiked to them, Vince was identifying all the wildflowers we came across; I was so inspired by it, I tried to include some of them in the painting. (We also banded a Red-cockaded Woodpecker chick, but that’s another story!) Another massive “thanks” to Ginny Stirling Svoboda, for helping photograph some actual tortoises!” -Peter R. Gerbert
