"Florida
Scrub Jays have no fear of people and they can be hand-fed broken
up pieces of bread, crackers and their favorite food, shelled peanuts.
It is quite a thrill for wildlife enthusiast like me when these wild
birds very gently perch on my fingers, looking up at me with what
appears to be recognition that I trying to help them, if only in a
very small way. Scientists are only recently starting to realize that
the brain cavity of the bird works unlike any other living creature
on the planet. Their level of intelligence we cannot measure, but
with recent studies, it is believed that most birds have the ability
to think, reason and learn... (Continued at bottom of page.)

The Florida Scrub
Jay, if you ask me, is standing out in front of all other birds mainly
for one reason. They have a very strong social structure very much
like that of the wolf. It has been studied by Universities and forestry
services here in Florida for many years. No other species of bird
in the world has this form of social structure that anyone is aware
of! The Scrub Jays of Florida are not loners. They live in colonies.
If you see one (you have to be in the right place, typically scrub
oak forests; that's how they got their undeserving name) chances are
there are more of them around. The breeding pairs mate for life and
they have been known to adopt chicks from other families. Some of
the Jays in the colony become "designated babysitters" and these particular
birds will never mate. It is their lifelong duty to help care for
new chicks and to help defend the colony and territory from predators.
A couple of years ago the bird
was voted on to become the official State Bird of Florida but the
bill was not passed. Not everyone in Florida is familiar with these
unique birds. There are no Scrub Jays found up in the panhandle, but
it's something that school field trips might remedy.
It is now estimated that
there are only between 7,000 to 11,000 Scrub Jays remaining in Florida,
they are found only in certain areas that offer just the right habitat
for them. Most colonies are located around the Ocala National Forest,
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and in the Lake Wales Ridge
in Highland and Polk Counties.
The fact the birds thrive
on high and dry, sandy soil areas hurts them too. Their habitat is
usually prime building ground; this is the main cause for their decline."
